That's because surrounding something with double-equals has significance—it's similar to notextile tags. In this case you're surrounding an equals sign, so RedCloth is hearing you say, "don't touch this equals sign!"

Are you trying to make a horizontal rule with the equals signs? How would you feel if that feature were added?

Hmmm... right, this feature, not bug. I try to work Instiki with RedCloth-4, but some tests breaks.

What does Instiki use repeated equals for?

In tests for mixed markup (textile & markdown).

I took a look at this again and ran the instiki tests against RedCloth 4.1.1. RedCloth isn't intended to handle Markdown, so I won't be changing the behavior of repeated equals for now.

If you can give me some specific test cases that are being failed in instiki (and not because of Markdown), I'd be glad to fix them.
