Build in Markdown detection and delegation

Reported by Jason Garber | April 18th, 2009 @ 08:27 AM

Had an idea and I'm curious whether it will be brilliant and encourage the spread of Textile or whether it will be a big mistake or, even worse, repetition of a previous big mistake:

What if RedCloth would start parsing a document and if it picked up enough Markdown stuff, would quit parsing and hand the whole thing off to a Markdown library?

It should probably be a separate project. As I'm thinking about it, all the options it would take would really muddy RedCloth. You'd need to know which markdown library to use, switches to turn it on and off, extra markup for forcing one parser or the other, etc.
